Hillend Park

Evening local event and part of WORLD ORIENTEERING DAY 2016

Wed 11th May 2016

Type of event: Local-(D)
Near: Edinburgh

Results now available, including splits    Note that one competitor on the Orange course didn't download before heading home so no time is included.  We know the competitor punched the clear, start and finish boxes and was safely back in the car park so we can work out a total time.  We don't however know if all the correct controls for the Orange course were punched so we have had to leave this competitor off the final results.

Hope you all enjoyed a lovely evening at Hillend to help celebrate World Orienteering Day!

Organiser, Ewart Scott writes:  Thanks to those who attended the ESOC local event at Hillend.  As with many local events, it’s great to see so many families attending.  The turn out of over eighty was a great contribution to World Orienteering Day.

Mark’s courses were very well received, especially the Spanish Score, where competitors had to keep a tally of controls already visited to ensure they all were.  Counting occasionally proved a problem!  Conditions with the descending mist and decreasing visibility increased the technical challenge more so on the upper parts of the hill.

Unusually, an SI unit failed.  I hope this didn’t cause too much time loss to those who visited that control.

Thanks too, to all the ESOC helpers including the control collectors.

Our next local event is at Bonaly on 18th June 2016hope to see you there.

Controller's Comments

I would like to thank the Planner, Organisers and the many volunteers that helped to bring a fantastic day of orienteering. We are very grateful for all the positive feedback we got from you.

We did encounter problems on the day with some controls going missing, which affected every course.   In the published results we've given the benefit of the doubt to everyone who completed their course except for the missing controls.  But it is not possible to give a result to anyone who didn't punch the Finish control, which unfortunately included almost everyone except those on the Score Course.

A problem with the map scales, which should have been picked up, resulted in the actual course lengths being much longer than the stated distances.  We do apologise most sincerely for this.
Also, maps were printed at 1:40,000 not the 1:25,000 marked on the map, and the print quality of the maps was not as good as we would have liked.  All these factors combined to make everyone's run much longer and seem much harder than intended.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed to the great spirit of this ambitious event, despite the problems.

Type of event: Local-(D)
Near: City of Edinburgh

First of all, if you or your children were trying Orienteering today, welcome to the sport, and we hope to see you again soon. If you enjoyed it, your next local event could be at Vogrie Country Park on 2nd April (see link on Events page for further details). To develop your Orienteering skills contact ESOC for Junior and Senior training sessions.
Today's event was attended by over 100 participants in splendid warm sunshine. The courses ranged from White around the school grounds to Light Green taking in the woods plus fast zig zags in the grounds. There was a lot of opportunity for playing, picnicking and sunbathing after completing your courses.
Thankyou for respecting the taped Out of Bounds area (waterlogged playing fields and very tempting long-jump sand pit), and of course thankyou for coming.
Katherine Kirk, Co-Organiser

Orienteering is not for the fainthearted!  This was decisively demonstrated today by Planners, Competitors and Club Helpers alike.  It wasn't easy to put out the controls in the cold sleet during the morning.  It certainly wasn't easy to even make your way to the Start through the muddy field, let alone find all your controls and keep your feet (mostly) out on the hill.  But everyone came back smiling; the younger runners, being the muddiest, perhaps smiling most of all.
It definitely was not easy to man the Start and the Finish in the gathering snowstorm, or to stand in the cold tent and the even colder "lean-to" shelter, registering and downloading everyone.   And perhaps the hardest job of all was taking in the controls, undoing all the Gripples, in the gathering darkness.

Well done and thank you very much to Planners, Competitors and Club Helpers alike for taking part in this memorable event.
