Who would have thought, in the pouring rain at 9am, that a lovely sunny afternoon on Holyrood Park awaited us?    The weather forecast did promise an improvement, but it was hard to believe.
I’m afraid that Lukas and his team of helpers from Edinburgh University did get a bit wet putting out controls, but by the afternoon the sun was shining and it was almost warm.  There is no better place for orienteering than Holyrood Park on a lovely autumn afternoon.
It was great to see the whole range of participants, from families of young children to elite orienteers, enjoying the challenges set by the Planner – and there was a course for everyone.  Only the bravest tackled the 445m of climb on the Green Course, though.  It was  a fine co-operative effort by ESOC and EUOC to stage this joint event.  Ben very impressively conjured up live results on wifi.  Thank you very much to everyone who participated.    Results from the ESOC Junior Club Championships, held at this event, will be published later.

WinSplits - more in-depth analysis of split times.

We were lucky today that the wet morning turned into a lovely sunny afternoon, enabling the Figgate Park to be enjoyed at its best.  The live music by the Caleerie Buskers made for a lovely atmosphere, and this event to celebrate the life of Tom Ryan was well supported by both regular orienteers and their families and by local residents who live near the Park.    Several children took the big leap forward into doing a course by themselves for the first time.  Bigger people over 16 were more challenged in the surrounding streets.  Everyone you meet is always very welcoming at the Figgate Park, which encourages us to hold more events here.

Planner's comments

Thanks to all who attended the SOL event at Craig a Barns. It was a fair test of quality orienteering which inevitably led to a wide range of times for each course. A fairly typical spread of results that one would expect in a challenging area with the winning times in each class within the windows for SOL events.

I chose to start most courses at the top of the hill (literally) to eliminate the climb involved in each course. I hope the walk to the start was worth it. An unexpected turnout from the Swedish O squad led to some remarkable times on the longer courses that more than made up for the lack of vet orienteers who were absent due to the VHI.

The planning was geared round old fashioned long legs with an exciting array of route choices available. Congratulations to those that found the optimum routes. I felt the area merited a more traditional form of planning which added a bit of variety to our range of SOL events.

Thanks to all those who helped out, especially the controller and organiser.

Organiser's Comments

Few but orienteers would brave the ex-hurricane weather we had today to run 4 courses with a mentally challenging maze added in for a bit extra fun. I was certainly concerned about turnout when I saw the forecast- but, I needn't have worried. It was wonderful to see so many people of all ages come, so thanks to each and every one of you. Everyone I heard from really enjoyed themselves and the competitive but friendly atmosphere was excellent to see. Thanks go to Chris for the excellent, not-so-straightforward courses and, to all the helpers who braved the weather to make this event run so smoothly. Last but by no means least, sincerest thanks go to Lauriston Castle for letting us use their grounds.

A blue cagoule that was found after the Ultrasprint please contact tylertmorrison@yahoo.co.uk if it is yours.

Who needs good weather for orienteering?   Not young kids certainly;  wet is fun.  Not experienced orienteers,  who relished the opportunity  to test their skills when the cloud obscured the familiar terrain.  Not newcomers, who are up for any challenge.    Seeing the forecast yesterday for bright yellow lightening strikes coming very near Edinburgh on Saturday afternoon, I thought hardly anyone would come to this event – which would have been an awful waste of David Nisbet’s excellent courses.    How wrong I was.

Thank you very much to everyone who came out on this wet afternoon to enjoy Blackford Hill in one of its more challenging modes.  Orienteering is usually easier than this.  Please come again soon.  Thank you very much to all club members who worked long wet stints to put on the event and take in all the controls afterwards.  it was well worth it.

Organiser's Comments:

Thank you to everyone who competed today at St Andrews.  Everyone I spoke to enjoyed the score format for urban orienteering and there were many animated control choice and route choice discussions going on near Registration afterwards.

Apologies that we had to move the Finish a few metres from the site shown on the map. The pipeline trench and subsequent re-laying of slabs would make it obvious to everyone why it had to be moved!!  This work started very unexpectedly on Wednesday of this week and we thought it was finished at close of business on Friday afternoon. It was something of a surprise to find a man and 2 machines working there on the morning of the event!  The contractor was extremely helpful and moved his machines so we could put the Finish where it would cause fewest problems for competitors. We are very grateful for his understanding and cooperation.
