Blackford Hill

Local event in the East of Scotland series

Sat 19th Jul 2014

Type of event: Local-(D)
Near: City of Edinburgh

Who needs good weather for orienteering?   Not young kids certainly;  wet is fun.  Not experienced orienteers,  who relished the opportunity  to test their skills when the cloud obscured the familiar terrain.  Not newcomers, who are up for any challenge.    Seeing the forecast yesterday for bright yellow lightening strikes coming very near Edinburgh on Saturday afternoon, I thought hardly anyone would come to this event – which would have been an awful waste of David Nisbet’s excellent courses.    How wrong I was.

Thank you very much to everyone who came out on this wet afternoon to enjoy Blackford Hill in one of its more challenging modes.  Orienteering is usually easier than this.  Please come again soon.  Thank you very much to all club members who worked long wet stints to put on the event and take in all the controls afterwards.  it was well worth it.

Organiser's Comments:

Thank you to everyone who competed today at St Andrews.  Everyone I spoke to enjoyed the score format for urban orienteering and there were many animated control choice and route choice discussions going on near Registration afterwards.

Apologies that we had to move the Finish a few metres from the site shown on the map. The pipeline trench and subsequent re-laying of slabs would make it obvious to everyone why it had to be moved!!  This work started very unexpectedly on Wednesday of this week and we thought it was finished at close of business on Friday afternoon. It was something of a surprise to find a man and 2 machines working there on the morning of the event!  The contractor was extremely helpful and moved his machines so we could put the Finish where it would cause fewest problems for competitors. We are very grateful for his understanding and cooperation.

Bonaly was so busy this afternoon, it was hard to tell who was orienteering, walking (some with dogs)  going camping or coming back from it,  or just looking for a quiet afternoon’s stroll.  There were lots of cyclists too. Fortunately there is room for everyone on the hill (if not in the upper car park).  We were delighted to be joined by so many parents and children from Bonaly Primary School, and the refreshments they brought were very welcome on this hot afternoon.   It was also good to see members of several different orienteering clubs, in addition to adventurers ranging in age from two to quite old, trying it for the first time.  The Planner, Gemma, had been meticulous about her control placing for the courses of varying difficulty, and almost everyone was successful in completing their course, though the large scale map foxed a couple of first-timers.
Well done everyone: competitors, club members who willingly wore the “Ask me for Help” vests at the Front of House and others who implemented  the technical necessities for slick Entries and Results.   It was  a good afternoon’s experience for everyone.  Hope to see lots of you at our next event on Blackford Hill on 19th July.

Planners’ comments
It’s difficult to avoid climb at Hillend, especially on the longer courses – but hope you enjoyed the splendid views over the city. The recent ski centre development has restricted the western part of the area, and there have been many changes to paths as a result – the map was updated to take account of these, but much of the vegetation is out of date and will be reviewed.
Thanks to everyone for coming, and apologies for the delay to the publication of the results, which was due to a small technical issue.

It was a lovely sunny afternoon for this local event but what everyone will undoubtedly remember will be the effects of the wind!  It really was a windy afternoon; a day for holding tightly to maps, hats and small children.  Nevertheless everyone seemed to enjoy the challenges presented by the courses.

There were extra challenges, due to the wind, for the organisers.  Most regulars would notice there were no flags, start or finish banners or even the usual amount of signage.  This was all due to wind issues - these simply would not stand up to that level of wind.  The red/white tapes indicating the route to the start did, thankfully, stand up to the onslaught of the wind.  We were fortunate in being able to move the course choice/registration indoors and I'm sure competitors were happier be squashed in a room than to have had to contend with looking at maps and filling in entry forms outside.

We are very thankful to the Army for allowing us to use their building and garden for the event. This was a huge advantage for the organisers as we had access to electricity and toilets - unusual for a local event.    We also extend our thanks to the local farmer/shepherd for tolerating us being there at lambing time.  Our entreaties to everyone to shut gates were heartfelt and we are grateful for all our heeding this.

Thanks to all who helped on the day and to all competitors who came along and enjoyed the orienteering challenges set for them.

Organiser's Comments

Good cool conditions for running – yes.  Wet – no.  Windy – only a little.   Varied terrain with easy parkland for Juniors and a wooded area for Orange and Green courses – yes.  Good planning – yes.  A challenge for everyone – I hope so.  Mains electricity and proper toilets – yes.  Mary Erskine and Ravelston Wood ticked all these boxes today.  We were delighted to welcome back lots of the people who have been to our Saturday events before, and lots of new ones who’d heard on the “parentmail” grapevine that it would be fun.   Grateful thanks to the larger than usual team of ESOC helpers and to the very co-operative staff of the Sports Centre.   Hope to see you all again soon.
