Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club
New to Orienteering?

Orienteering is an exciting outdoor adventure sport which involves navigating around a course using a detailed map and sometimes a compass.
The aim is to navigate between a set of control points and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
It does not matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can go at your own pace.

WOC Extra!

WOC Extra July 2024

WOC EXTRA! is an informal social and orienteering programme. The aim is very simple: to give you extra fun while you are in Edinburgh.

We can’t wait to welcome all WOC Tourists to Edinburgh. We hope you have an absolutely amazing time in Scotland and find lots of controls!
We hope WOC EXTRA! will enhance your overall experience of Scotland’s amazing capital city.
EVERYONE IS WELCOME! Come along and socialise, do more orienteering, or both! Whatever suits you is cool.

AND almost ALL of the orienteering maps you’ll run on with WOC EXTRA! are in central Edinburgh. You will build up an overall collection of city maps. These are adjacent/overlap and will create a huge mapped orienteering area for you as a souvenir of your time with us. A lot of the maps were mapped by the main WOC mappers.

Further information can be found here.

To access the Mapprun, you need to firstly download the Mapprun App.

The courses are located in the folders: UK/Scotland/Edinburgh/WOC Extra!

There is a Long and a Short option of each day, use the appropriate map-run for which course you want to run.

July Social 2024Monday 1st July, Musselburgh Lagoons

June’s social took place at Musselburgh lagoons, where our Canoe-O practice is going from strength to strength. Organised by Hanne and David for the second year, the date was met with immediate acclaim, both by paddlers who had enjoyed themselves last time and also those who had missed out but heard all about it. (A third group of distressed would-be paddlers with other commitments will be pleased to hear that the Robertsons do report plans to do it all again next summer).

June Social 2024Monday 17th June, Pentland Skyline Run

The annual club pilgrimage into the Pentland Hills this year had ‘added interest’ due to the weather forecast suggesting periods of dampness and thundery showers around the time that club members would be out. Indeed, just at the suggested meeting time a loud clap was observed over the hills - one group already out and high up received an almighty fright it was later heard in conversation!

Jamie Stevenson Trophy 2024The Hermitage (Dunkeld), 16 June

Megan Brown leads the ESOC squad in the opening parade at the Jamie Stevenson Trophy 24

Sunday saw the 2024 edition of the annual junior inter-club competition, with a crack squad of 13 ESOC juniors (lucky for some!) venturing into the forests of Dunkeld, claiming a Bronze medal and in our biased opinion the smartest team turnout with ESOC kit and war paint on point!
