Coast and Islands 2021

25 - 30 July

Organised by Masterplan Adventure, Coast and Islands 2021 was 6 days of orienteering in locations along the west coast of Scotland from Ullapool to Skye, in the week immediately before the Scottish 6 Days. Numbers were strictly limited due to Covid restrictions, and the event quickly sold out.

Day 1 - Ullapool, Sunday 25 July
This was a sprint event in the town of Ullapool, with the Start on the beach. The terrain included the beach, parkland and streets in the town. The weather was warm and sunny, making a great start to the week.
ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Long Technical (89 competitors) - Rachel Brown 19th, Helen Bridle 22nd, Ben Brown 28th, Walter Clark 33rd, Keith Brown 37th
Short Technical (65) - Alison Cunningham 4th, Richard Oxlade 14th, Hanne Robertson 33rd
   Short Easy (14) - Megan Brown 3rd

Day 2 - Culag Wood, Lochinver, Monday 26 July
Culag Wood is a community woodland on a small hill within walking distance of Lochinver village. It’s a mixed conifer plantation with pockets of broadleaves, above the rocky shore, and the terrain includes many contour features, rock and vegetation changes. It was described as “the roughest day of the week”, and remarks from ESOC competitors confirmed this, with Walter Clark commenting, “It was very challenging today!! I have never crawled on my hands and knees as much in recent years!” There were also reports of abundant ticks.
ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Long Technical (97 competitors) - Helen Bridle 22nd, Walter Clark 30th, Rachel Brown 31st
   Short Technical (64) - Alison Cunningham 14th
Short Easy (15) - Maja Robertson 5th, Megan Brown 7th

Day 3 - Inverewe, Poolewe, Tuesday 27 July
This area is to the SE of the A832, across the road from Inverewe Gardens. The terrain includes a semi-mature Scots Pine and deciduous woods in the west, and most of the map is open grassy hillsides with many rock features.
ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Long Technical (94 competitors) - Helen Bridle 27th, Rachel Brown 29th
Short Technical (76) - Richard Oxlade 6th, Alison Cunningham 19th, Hanne Robertson 28th

Day 4 - Ben Shieldaig, Shieldaig Wednesday 28 July
Ben Shieldaig is on the south side of Upper Loch Torridon, and the event area was on the lower slopes of the hill, with open grassy slopes, marshes, bare rock, many boulders and some big crags. Parking was very limited so there were complicated arrangements to make the most of it. ESOC comments included: “Amazing terrain today - some of the best terrain ever!” and ”Fantastic. Rain stopped, sun came out, gentle breeze. Scenery and views stunning.”
ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Long Technical (90 competitors) - Helen Bridle 27th, Rachel Brown 32nd
Short Technical (73) - Alison Cunningham and Richard Oxlade 13th=

Day 5 - Kyle of Lochalsh, Thursday 29 July
At the east end of the Skye Bridge, the terrain at Kyle of Lochalsh covered the Plock of Kyle, community woodland west of the town. This has birch woodland and open areas on small hills, with many paths. The long course also included urban terrain in the town. Early starters had to contend with deep bracken, leaving elephant tracks for fortunate later starters.
ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Long Technical (87 competitors) - Helen Bridle 20th, Rachel Brown 22nd
Short Technical (83) - Alison Cunningham 11th, Richard Oxlade 22nd, Karena Hanley 38th

Day6 - Armadale Castle, Skye, Friday 30 July
Armadale is on the SE coast of the Sleat peninsula on Skye. Armadale Castle, now a ruin, is the former seat of the MacDonalds. The map includes natural oak and birch woodland, mature plantation conifer and broadleaved woodland in the area to the north and south of the castle grounds, with some steep slopes in the southern part.
ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Long Technical (66 competitors) - Rachel Brown 25th
Short Technical (54) - Richard Oxlade 3rd, Alison Cunningham 11th, Judith Bell 27th
   Short Easy (8) - Megan Brown 4th
