Dunrod Hill, 17 March
The 2019 Scottish heat for the CompassSport Cup and Trophy was hosted by Clydeside Orienteeers, at Dunrod Hill, near Greenock. (It was originally scheduled to be at Fairy Knowe and Doon Hill, near Aberfoyle, but changed due to problems with permissions.) There was a great turnout from ESOC, with competitors in nearly all of the CompassSport Cup classes.
Dunrod Hill is close to Greenock, west of Glasgow. It’s a large area of high, open moorland, with tussocky grass and heather on many small hills, plenty of rock detail, a lot of marshes, and panoramic views.
Roger Scrutton reports, “The drive across to Greenock didn't look very promising weather wise, but it turned into a beautiful, sunny early spring day. Much of the area had patchy snow cover, and slippery snow together with tussocky grass and heather made the going quite hard - feet got very cold. Snow-melt and rain contributed to marshes and streams - and mud. Nevertheless, everyone seemed to be smiling at the end.”
Registration and download were at the Greenock Cut Visitor Centre, where there was a café and interesting displays. Outside, there was lots of car park chatter, while enjoying coffee and cakes being sold by CLYDE juniors to raise funds for their trip to the World Schools Orienteering Championships in Estonia in late April/early May.
ESOC counts as a large club, and were competing with FVO, MAROC and MOR in the CompassSport Cup heat. We came 2nd (with 2402 points), behind FVO (2470 points). The winning team qualifies for the final, and if that club came 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the previous year’s final, then the team in 2nd place also qualifies. FVO came 2nd in the CompassSport Cup in 2018, so this year ESOC have also qualified.
The final will be on Sunday 20 October at Pippingford Park, near Crowborough in Sussex, hosted by Mole Valley Orienteering Club.
ESOC’s counting scorers were:
