We were a bit nervous about this event, as the forecast was for heavy rain.  This was going to ruin the experience for the Bonaly Primary School families, who had been looking forward to the event for weeks, encouraged by Judy.  However, the morning dawned fine, and we pressed on.......
Two o’clock and the sun still shining; tent and gazebo were up, controls all out, looking good.   Bonaly was busy; but some campers were entrusted with looking after the controls on their ”doorstep” and the mountain bikers were too busy to bother about us.  People started to arrive, and the event took off.  It was just great to see all the families from Bonaly, and the usual mix of first-timers and experienced orienteers, tackling the courses with gusto.
Many thanks firstly to the Bonaly parents who provided refreshments.  You’d be more than welcome at any of our other events!
Secondly many thanks to the larger-than-usual team of ESOC helpers, all of whom played a vital part in this highly successful event.

You can reach fairly close to this area by bus - Lothian Buses service 10. If you choose to use the bus then please note that not every service 10 bus goes to the closest point to the area. Try to take a bus which terminates at Bonaly rather than Torphin otherwise your walk will be quite a bit longer.

Registration & Start Times

Registration and Starts will both be between 2pm and 3pm.
For this event, as for the whole East of Scotland Saturday series, it is not necessary - or possible - to enter in advance. Everyone is welcome to turn up and enter on the day.

Course Information

There will be White, Yellow and Orange courses and something for more experienced orienteers. Because this area is suitable for all skill levels there is also likely to be a good course suitable for experienced orienteers.

Explanation of colour courses

  • White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
  • Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
  • Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
  • Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
  • Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
  • Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.
  • Brown & Black are very physically demanding and have a very hard navigational difficulty. They are for experienced orienteers only.
  • Score means visiting as many controls as possible in any order in a specific time, like 45mins.
