Planners Comments

Thank you to all who came to sample the pleasures of running through Hopetoun House grounds and estate on a beautiful autumn day. The courses were planned to offer the challenge of quick decision making and route choice, as I was aware that no control sites were going to be too hard to find, nor was the terrain going to be overly physical.
Unfortunately the overprint of the red line demarcating the boundaries that were uncrossable was not terribly clear on the map. However we hoped that everyone would be aware of these restrictions by reading their final details and seeing the maps and notices in the start lanes. However once out in the terrain it was much more difficult to see what was crossable and what wasn’t and a few people did try to cross where they should not have. Thank you to those who were honest enough to own up and apologies to those who found it difficult to read.
Despite the lengths being considerably longer than the straight line route, and the climb on the longer courses being far from “negligible” as stated on the final details (!) the winning times were as expected. Congratulations to all who won trophies.
Many thanks to Hopetoun House and Estate for allowing us access to this delightful area, and especial thanks to Maree Morison, Head Ranger who was very helpful throughout the planning process.

FINAL DETAILS are now available.

MAP: The Hopetoun Estate map was recently updated and extended.

TERRAIN: The terrain is typical parkland with a mixture of runnable woodland and wide open spaces. There is an extensive path network. The Estate is on the banks of the Forth and there are some wonderful views.

DOGS: Dogs under close control at all times and no dogs to be taken on the courses.

Directions

Hopetoun House is close to the Forth Road Bridge at South Queensferry. It is well signposted off the A904 through the road works for the new Forth Crossing west of the Echline Roundabout.

Parking is within the grounds of Hopetoun House.

Course Information

There will be a full range of colour coded courses as follows, White, Yellow, Orange, Light Green, Short Green, Green, Blue, Brown. There will also be a free String course.

If you want to be competitive in the East of Scotland (ESOA) Championships, which run in conjunction with this SoSOL event, you should make sure you enter the correct course for your age class. The age classes for the ESOA Championships are shown here.

Explanation of colour courses

White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.
Brown & Black are very physically demanding and have a very hard navigational difficulty. They are for experienced orienteers only.
Score means visiting as many controls as possible in any order in a specific time, like 45mins.
