Public Transport Options
By Bus: Check the Lothian Buses website. Nos 37, 47, 140 and 141 (East Coast Buses) all go to Penicuik
By Bike: A variety of quiet cycle route maps throughout the city are available on the Edinburgh City Council Quiet Routes web pages. It will be possible to lock your bike close by Registration while you run and there will be a tent to leave bags.
Map / Terrain
The map (scale 1:4000 and double-sided) is not technically sprint spec but mapper Graeme says 'It looks fine - I doubt if anyone will notice its not sprint spec. I do have some memory that the vegetation is mapped for winter and a few places you might hope to get through are impossible!'
The planning means that there should be no need to enter the vegetation as the courses stick to the housing estate, so no need for full leg cover.
Safety Notes
- There will be lots of people in the area and there are some narrow paths so please be careful watching out for people running in the opposite direction to you.
- Please avoid running close to local residents homes.
- You must report to Download even if you do not complete your course, so we know you are back safely, and we don’t have to mount a search for you.
- The area may be busy with the general public, including dog walkers, runners and bikers. Please respect their right to be there at the same time as you are orienteering.
- Please give any dog walkers you encounter extra space ie don’t run too close, especially if their dog/dogs are off lead
Course Information
There will be 2 courses, Long and Short, approx 5k and 3.5k straight line distances TBC
There are quite a lot of short flights of steps which will be encountered which don't appear on the map at this spec. There are also several areas of community art where there are collections of knee high concrete walls and cylinder shapes which again are not mapped - see picture.
There will be artificial barriers with nothing marked on the ground. The map will be double sided and the barrier positions may be different on each side.
Many road crossings so all Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
