Explanation of event types

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun App.

Map / Terrain

Sprint style map probably at 1:4000. Please refresh your understanding of the Sprint mapping symbol set - Sprint (ISSprOM 20-19-2) - here and in particular the symbols indicating out of bounds areas (olive green), impassable features which must not be crossed and artificial barriers.

Maps will be printed at A4 on normal, non-waterproof paper, so if wet bring a poly pocket or map bag.

Those new to Urban orienteering can see examples of sprint maps (showing artificial barriers as thick purple lines) that were used in February this year for EUOCs Big Weekend at South Queensferry (event called Saturday WRE) and Bughtlin (event called Sunday Sprint/Urban) on Routegadget here

Planners notes:

There are artificial barriers marked on the map with thick purple overprint lines. These are not marked in the terrain so it is up to you to ensure that you don’t cross one. Do not rely on what others are doing as they might be on different courses or different parts of the course and thus have different barriers to you. On the long course the barriers are different on part one and part two so you will be able to cross different areas in the different parts.

The courses use narrow alleyways and passages - there is likely to be runners coming from different directions. Please take care especially around blind corners.

The courses cross the main Portobello Highstreet in the vicinity of the Aldi. This is a busy road and please take care when crossing.

Safety Notes

  • The courses loop around a relatively small area of Portobello and there will be lots of people in the same area and there are some narrow alleyways so please be careful, watching out for people running in the opposite direction to you.
  • Please avoid running close to local residents homes.
  • You must report to Download even if you do not complete your course, so we know you are back safely, and we don’t have to mount a search for you.
  • The area will be busy with the general public, including dog walkers, runners and bikers. Please respect their right to be there at the same time as you are orienteering.
  • Please give any dog walkers you encounter extra space ie don’t run too close, especially if their dog/dogs are off lead

Course Information

Please also read the Planner's notes in the Map section.

There are 2 courses , SI timing will be used for Start and Finish only, controls are ONLY marked with red/white tape streamers or flour.

Long Course: Maps are printed double sided.

There are two parts: part 1 on one side of the map has 17 controls and an optimal distance of 3.3k; part 2 on the other side of the map has 13 controls and an optimal distance of 2.6k. There are two options to run this:

  • As a continuous course in which case ignore the finish printed on part 1 of the map and flip the map over when you reach control 17. On part 2 of the map there is a new start triangle where control 17 is and the control numbering starts again from 1.
  • As intervals in which case run to the finish on part 1 and have a rest before commencing part 2 of the course.

Short Course:

This course has 17 controls and an optimal distance of 3.5k.

This area includes road crossings so ALL under 16s must be accompanied at all times by an adult when running. Due to the informality of the event the adult can also be competitive (see Entries section).

NB: Control descriptions show straight line distance not optimal running distance which will be longer as described above.
