Planner’s Comments: Ewart Scott writes:  Thanks to everyone for coming to the ESOC Livingston Sprintelope last night and for the
positive comments on the courses.
Janet, Fiona and Robert deserve thanks for looking after the assembly.  Thanks too, to Graeme Ackland for use of his map and drawing recent changes.
You were lucky with the weather. I got a soaking when collecting the markers as had no rain jacket, starting off when very fair. Markers at 5 and 17 were missing, all others there.

Very low key urban event.

Organiser’s Comments:  Jo Rose writes - Would you fancy organising an event this year?' asked Janet in that winning way of hers... Back in the depths of winter it seemed a long way off, but it's been good fun and I've learned a lot. Covenanters Wood is a compact area but packed with features for interesting courses from Mark.
It was super to see plenty of people of all ages trying orienteering, some through leaflets and a local school assembly celebrating the success of their team at the Scottish Schools event. In the middle of a wet few weeks we managed a mostly sunny day too which was a bonus. Almost 120 entries kept Eleanor and her team in the computing tent typing furiously.
Huge thanks to the team of volunteers from ESOC who made it happen. Good to have some of our capable juniors helping too - well done Thea, Ursula, Robbie, Tim and Rachel. Special shout out to Judy who has mentored me with grace and tact along the learning curve. More to learn I'm sure!

Excellent little wood with something for everyone, whatever their skill level and experience.

Routegadget is here

PLANNER'S COMMENTS: Richard Purkis writes:  I volunteered to plan this urban at South Queensferry as I am a fan of a good urban event and I was keen to be on the other side for once, and also to experience planning an urban having only planned forest events before.
Having not run here before I took at look at the 2016 sprint events courses for initial inspiration. With the community hub chosen as the ideal event centre and finish location, the initial puzzle was where to base the start so that all the senior courses could have some legs in the old town. This was solved very quickly on my first visit. Seeing that view and enough space for start boxes and a run out down to the road I knew nowhere else would beat that.
I struggled to find decent long route choice legs for a long time and wasn't completely happy with the courses until very late on but in the end I was happy there was a good mix of legs with enough route choice to keep everyone entertained. I greatly appreciated the positive feedback coming in and was interested in what routes were taken. Please have a look at the document I have put together showing the route choice legs on each course.
It seemed destined that every time I visited South Queensferry it rained but thankfully it stayed clear on the day and I hope everyone enjoyed their run.
Lastly thank you to Jayne, Rob and Janet for making this such a pleasant event to plan.

ORGANISER'S COMMENTS:  Jayne MacGregor writes: Thanks to all the competitors that came to South Queensferry on what turned out to be a lovely day. Apologies to those at the North Start for the slightly out of sync beeping from the clocks, hopefully it didn’t disturb too much and that the view of the bridges and the Firth of Forth made up for it.

Organising urban events has its challenges, not least the amount of signage required but the benefits are often a great Event Centre with toilets and power!!

LOST PROPERTY: Only one item of lost property, an orange whistle on a short string loop with a safety pin. Contact me to be reunited

FINAL DETAILS now available. Please read these as they contain extra and updated information. A pdf version is available to download in main web item.  Start Times available on Fabian4

Holyrood Park

ESOC local event in Edinburgh and Lothians (part of World Orienteering Day)

Wed 15th May 2019

Type of event: Local
Near: City of Edinburgh

The timing issues have been sorted out, so you will be pleased to see that the anomalous negative times have all been corrected. The results are here.

Winsplits are here. If you are new to orienteering, these splits allow you to compare how you did over every leg with the others on your course. Hopefully if you have a look it should be self explanatory.

ORGANISER’S COMMENTS: Janet writes - There's not much to beat a run around up on Arthur's Seat on a lovely sunny evening; perfect for World Orienteering Day.   The Results show a great mixture of regular orienteers, who would know what to expect, and relative newcomers who seemed to enjoy it just as much.  The large group of Beavers, who appear in the Results as Groups 1-8 were real stars with their excited enthusiasm.
Coming after a morning spent down near Holyrood Palace introducing school groups - and an MSP - to orienteering through activities and games, some of the volunteer helpers put in a twelve-hour day; but the lovely sunshine and the appreciation of the competitors makes it all worth while!

An excellent orienteering area for every skill and level of experience. This early evening event will be part of World Orienteering Day events and activities in Edinburgh.  Read on for more information.
