Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

An Introduction to TurfOur quick start guide for Turf!

Turf is a fun and free GPS-based app for your smartphone. It will encourage you to get out and about, and take you to different places. You can run, walk or cycle – there aren’t any rules on how to enjoy Turfing and you can do whatever suits you.
In Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club, we’ve been actively enjoying Turf for a number of years. We enjoy the combination of the physical activity, being outdoors and finding our way to the Turf zones. You can do as much or as little Turfing as you like, whenever you like, so it’s flexible and to some extent also addictive but in a good way!

How to get started:

  1. Download Turf
The game is available for free and can be downloaded from the Google Play store or Apple App Store. There are many games with “Turf” in their name – the one to look for has the Turfman logo and is simply called “Turf”, by Andrimon AB.
  2. Set Up
Once you’ve downloaded and installed Turf, start the game and then choose a username. Your username can be anything (but we recommend it is not your actual name).
  3. Take Zones
Turf is a location-based game using GPS technology, so you must go to the physical location of the virtual “zones”. On your phone, you will see the zones identified clearly on a satellite image of the local area. When you get to the location, the app will recognise this and you will “take” the zone. By taking zones, you can gain Turf points, earn virtual medals and also climb the leaderboards!
  4. Enjoy Turfing
There are lots of things to do and places to see when playing Turf – will you become a competitive player climbing the leaderboards, or do you simply want some extra motivation and new places to go when exercising? Turf is a fun game for everyone, regardless of age or ambitions! Welcome to an amazing community and a fun hobby!

  5. Get More Involved?
In Edinburgh, there are lots of active Turfers. From time to time, we get together for Turf events, and it’s a fun way to socialise with other local people.
