British Night Championships 2020Hambleden Estate, 22 February
A few ESOC members made the long journey south for this year’s British Night Championships, bringing back 3 trophies.
The British Night Championships were organised by Thames Valley Orienteering Club and took place on Saturday 22 February, at Hambleden Estate, in the Chiltern Hills near Henley-on-Thames. This area was used previously for days 2 and 4 of JK 2013. The terrain was fairly runnable, open deciduous woodland with a few coniferous parts, some brambles, and rhododendron in places. It was a bit muddy, especially on paths, and quite hilly.
The weather was mild but windy.
ESOC had 3 trophy winners:
Ian Pyrah (M75L), Janice Nisbet (W65L) and Eleanor Pyrah (W75).
Rona Lindsay came 1st in W21S and Brian Yates came 7th in M75L.
More details about the event are available here and the full results, including Routegadget, plus officials’ comments and photos, are on the British Night Championships 2020 results page of the TVOC website.
On Sunday 23 February, the Chiltern Challenge event took place in the same area, with the same start as the night before, close to assembly. There were lots of red kites above the parking field.
The weather was mostly fine again, though still windy, and it rained a little.
ESOC results:
Green (122 competitors) – Rona Lindsay 2nd
Short Green (91) – Janice Nisbet 1st, Ian Pyrah 9th, Bryan Yates 87th
Very Short Green (21) – Eleanor Pyrah 5th
More details about the event can be found here and full results, including Routegadget, plus officials’ comments and photos, are available on the Chiltern Challenge results page of the TVOC website.
These events were the second and third in the 2020 UK Orienteering League – more details about this league are on the UK Orienteering League page of the British Orienteering website. With these events included, ESOC is lying 28th in the club competition. The score for each club is calculated automatically from the 15 best club members' scores (across various age class groups) – ESOC currently only has 4 scorers, so more will be included as the year goes on.
