A few ESOC members travelled to the Lake District for a weekend of events, and brought home two trophies from the British Night Championships, plus several medals.

The 2024 British Night Championships were organised by West Cumberland Orienteering Club, and took place on the SW shores of Derwentwater, near Keswick. The parking and arena were in the Borrowdale Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite at the south end of the area, with the start and finish very close at hand, and a large marquee for prizegiving and socialising. The map included Hawse End, Manesty Park and the lower slopes of Catbells, and the terrain was mostly deciduous open woodland, with some contour detail and rock features. Towards the finish there were some controls in marshy open ground, fairly flat and runnable with some big paths and boardwalks. The weather was fine, with a beautiful starry sky.

ESOC results:

  • M65L (18 competitors) – Crawford Lindsay 15th
  • M80 (6) – Ian Pyrah 3rd
  • W21L (10) – Rachel Brown 2nd (running as EUOC)
  • W65L (7) – Sally Lindsay 1st
  • W70L (5) – Janice Nisbet 3rd
  • W80 (3) – Eleanor Pyrah 1st

Full results are on the WCOC website, along with Routegadget for courses 1-4 and courses 5-8. Further information about the event is currently available on the British Night Championships 2024 page of the British Orienteering website.

A few ESOC members had competed earlier in the day at a Sprint event in Keswick, centred on Fitz Park. This was organised by Borderliners – see the BL website for full results:

On Sunday 11 February, Lakeland Orienteering Club organised a Cumbrian Galoppen event on Loughrigg Fell, above Ambleside. This is a high open fell, with big and small crags, marshes, small tarns, paths and plenty of contour detail everywhere. There was a longish walk up to the start, and a longer walk back from the finish. The weather was sunny and clear, with panoramic views of the higher fells and along the lake below.

ESOC results:

  • Green (112 competitors) – Richard Oxlade 19th (5th M65), Les Dalgleish 68th (8th M70), Crawford Lindsay 87th (15th M65)
  • Short Green (59) – Janice Nisbet 9th (2nd W70), Margaret Dalgleish 11th (3rd W70), Sally Lindsay 20th (3rd W65), Ian Pyrah 28th (3rd M80), Brian Yates 49th (8th M80)
  • Very Short Green (7) – Eleanor Pyrah 3rd (1st W80)

Full results and other details about the event can be found on the Loughrigg event page of the LOC website.

These events were the 2nd and 3rd in the 2024 UK Orienteering League. There are more details about the UKOL, including the league tables, on the UK Orienteering League website. With the scores for these events included, ESOC is lying 18th in the club league. The latest score for each club is calculated automatically from the 15 best club members' scores (across various age class groups) - so the club members whose scores are included may change as the year goes on and more events are included.
