British Schools Orienteering Championships 2011Beecraigs, 20 November
This year the BSOC was held at Beecraigs Country Park, Linlithgow, with ESOC juniors amongst the prizewinners.
The British Schools Orienteering Championships is held annually in November. Over 80 school teams (600 juniors) travelled from all over Britain to compete in this year’s event, organised by the Scottish Schools’ Orienteering Association at Beecraigs Country Park. The area is wooded, with an extensive path network and varied features. The weather was fine.
Various clubs assisted at the event - 13 ESOC stalwarts organised the start, which was quite complicated as it included issuing SI cards at -5 minutes, splitting into separate sets of lanes for boys and girls, and issuing maps at -1 minute. There were 18 courses and a 2 hour start window, so it was busy.
ESOC juniors did well in several classes:
Year 5 girls – Rachel Brown 2nd (Bonaly Primary)
Year 6 girls – Kerry Wood 3rd (Kirkliston Primary)
Year 9 girls – Andie Caldwell 24th (Currie High School)
Year 10 girls – Zoe Puyrigaud 24th (Firrhill High School)
Year 6 boys – Ben Brown 15th (Bonaly Primary)
Year 12 boys – Craig Nolan 3rd, Adam Hunter 12th (Currie High School) – many congratulations to their team, who won this class to become the Year 12 British Champions.
Craig and Adam also competed the previous day in the Scottish Schools’ Sprint Championships at Lanark Racecourse & Moor Country Park. (This was also the training event for the BSOC.) Congratulations to Craig, who won the S4 class.
