British Sprint & Middle Distance Championships 2012York, 24/25 March

ESOC enjoyed this great weekend.  Claire Ward and Helen Bridle were on the podium at both events, with Claire retaining her British Middle title.

The British Sprint Championships on Saturday 24 March were held at York University. The campus offered interesting route choices through complex buildings with covered walkways, staircases and pathways, a large lake with bridges, plus gardens and car parks. The weather was very misty to start with, but the sun did eventually break through.

Most of the classes with ESOC competitors had 3 parallel heats, with 6 from each heat qualifying for the A final. For W65, 4 from each heat qualified. The total entries in each class were as follows: Men’s Open – 122; M55 – 66; M60 – 44; M65 – 42; Women’s Open – 91; W45 – 53; W55 – 37; W65 – 22.

In the final, results were often very close, and a few seconds lost could mean a result many places further down.

ESOC results from the final were:
Men’s Open B – Andrew Lindsay 49th, Craig Nolan 56th, Alastair Hindle 68th
M55 B – Crawford Lindsay 19th
M60 B – Dave Kershaw 1st
M65 A – Roger Scrutton 6th, Ian Pyrah 18th
M65 B – Brian Yates 18th=
Women’s Open A – Helen Bridle 2nd, Claire Ward 3rd
Women’s Open B – Rona Lindsay 3rd
W45 A – Helena Nolan 6th

The British Middle Distance Championships were on Sunday 25 March at Strensall Common, NE of York. The terrain is very flat natural heathland, with marshes, tussock and heather, areas of birch woodland and scattered pine trees. Careful navigation was needed. The weather was warm and sunny.
