Club Captain’s Chat - August 2015
Due to a technical problem, Helena's report didn't make it into the August issue of Capital-O, and is available here instead.
World Orienteering Championships (WOC)
I am delighted that Claire Ward was selected for Great Britain to compete at the WOC in Inverness. She was returning from injury and still managed to finish 36th in the Long and 9th in the Relay, which was a great achievement. WOC was a fantastic spectacle showing the world what orienteering is all about. If you did not get a chance to spectate then you could possibly still see the action on BBC i-player as it was shown on BBC Alba. WOC was run in conjunction with the Scottish 6 Days. Many club members were involved with both events and I would like to thank them all for their time and dedication; events like this cannot happen without many thousands of hours of volunteering.
Scottish 6 Days
This was probably the biggest 6-Days ever and I think we had about 6,000 entries which meant all the age classes were highly competitive, with a strong international contingent, so I was very impressed that ESOC had 4 podium positions. Rachel Brown was amazing finishing 1st in W12A, father and son team Walter and Adam Clark were 1st in M35S and M10B respectively, and there was also a very impressive 3rd place by Helen Bridle in W21 Elite. Some of us didn't get the results we'd like, so take the tip I was given: "If you can't pronounce their name they don't count", and that will make you feel better!
The following people had top 10 results:
M10B - Joseph Lawlor 10th
M20S - Jamie Cunningham 6th
M40S - Alistair Hindle 6th
M60S - Roger Garnet 10th
W50L - Alison Cunningham 9th
W60S - Janice Nisbet 7th
W70L - Eleanor Pyrah 13th.
Well done to everyone who competed, especially those who finished all 6 days, and sorry if I've missed anyone out in the results.
Jamie Stevenson Trophy
This is a junior-only inter-club competition which was held at Kinnoul Hill, Perth on 14th June. We had 8 juniors competing for the club and finished 8th, which is very respectable given that the team was made up of several very young members. Thanks and well done to them all.
