Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

ELO’s Wonderful WeekendEast Lothian, 26/27 November

This excellent double-header weekend, organised by East Lothian Orienteers, offered the final Scottish Orienteering Urban League event of the year plus a South of Scotland Orienteering League event, and had a good turnout from ESOC.

On Saturday, SOUL 13 took place in Haddington, the largest town in East Lothian, with the event centre at the Poldrate Mill Arts Centre, on the south side of the town. The Start was a short walk further south, over the River Tyne. Courses led straight away into a complex housing estate in the SE of Haddington, with many pathways and dead ends giving some interesting route choice. The longest courses also visited another housing estate further north, and all finished with a few controls along the riverside.
The weather was fine, and quite mild, though breezy.

ESOC results in the top half:
M Vet (12 competitors) – Terry Johnstone 5th
W Vet (10) – Hanne Robertson 3rd
M Supervet (15) – Keith Brown 6th
W Supervet (7) – Helena Nolan 1st

On Sunday, the fifth SoSOL event of the year was at Saltoun Wood, south of Pencaitland. The terrain here is mixed woodland, with a good network of tracks and paths, mostly quite level except for the steep-sided valley of the Birns Water. There was a lot of undergrowth in the woodland - the bracken was dying down, but there were still plenty of brambles catching everyone out. Courses looped round the area, and the longest crossed the Birns Water to Humbie Wood.
It was a lovely sunny day, with a cool wind.

ESOC members in the top half of the results for their course were:
Blue (33 competitors) – Keith Brown 3rd, Jonathan Ellis 15th
Green (29) – Hanne Robertson 6th, Calum Robertson 9th, Roger Garnett 10th, Les Dalgleish 12th, Roger Scrutton 13th, Mark Naylor 14th
Short Green (16) – Sally Lindsay 3rd, Margaret Dalgleish 4th, Eleanor Pyrah 6th
Light Green (11) – Megan Brown 1st, Robert Simmers 2nd, Olly Simmers 3rd, Samantha Baker 4th
Yellow (11) – Ben Davison-Ellis 5th
