EOC 2022Rakvere, Estonia, 3 - 7 August

Rachel Brown was selected at short notice for the GB team at the European Orienteering Championships.

The European Orienteering Championships was held in Rakvere, in northern Estonia, and was also Round 2 of the 2022 World Cup. The GB team comprised 7 men and 7 women, and it was Rachel’s first senior competition at international level. She ran in the Middle Distance event and the Relay.

The Middle Distance Qualification races were on Wednesday 3 August, at Põlula. The official description said: “The landscape offers detailed relief with boulders and hillsides. Mobility varies from good (coniferous forest) to poor (deciduous). There are also many marshy areas.” It was very dense forest where it was difficult to see the terrain, or even the kite, resulting in many big mistakes and long times, even for the most experienced competitors. There were three qualification heats, and the top 20 in each heat qualified for the Middle Distance A Final.

After the Long event on Thursday 4 August and the rest day on Friday 5 August, the Middle Distance Finals were on Saturday 6 August, again at Põlula, but further west. This forest was also very dense with tricky terrain, and unfortunately it was raining heavily. Rachel ran in the B Final.

The Relays on Sunday 7 August had sunny weather, but the terrain was again dense, challenging forest. Rachel’s team finished in 29th place (out of 41).
