Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

ESMS / ESOC Collaboration on home turfLocal Event at Mary Erskine School & Ravelston Woods

A willing band of pupil volunteers from ESMS (Erskine Stewart's Melville Schools) orienteering club helped to organise ESOC's Local event in March.

ESOC have used the area known as Mary Erskine School & Ravelston Woods for Local events for many years. This year we invited the ESMS (Erskine Stewart's Melville Schools) orienteering club members to take part in the organisation. The ESMS O club are coached by staff member Rona Molloy and husband Jonathan and attend most Local events in the Edinburgh area in term time (usually entering 25-35 pupils) and this year they even went on a weekend camp to Pitlochry in February.

The pupils (mentored by a few ESOC members) covered most aspects of the organisation i.e. putting out signage, running Registration and Download, building and operating the Start and collecting controls. They all did a great job in their various tasks and Rona reported that they all enjoyed themselves, and they also did well in the event too.
Further information about the event
is available in the Results section of this website.

The club is affiliated to ESOC and as such members are eligible for prizes in the ESOC Club Championships. For 2023 ESMS pupils won 4 of the junior prizes plus the “Most Improved” trophy for the whole club, and one pupil won an ESOA (East of Scotland Orienteering Association) Championships award. As pupils progress through the TD grades and the school years, they can then join ESOC (other clubs are also available!) as individual members and take advantage of the coaching available, not only put on by our ESOC coaches but through the ESOA. In addition, in the last couple of years, as the ESMS club has flourished, quite a few parents (the transport providers) have also joined ESOC.
