Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

ESOC at the 2022 VHINorth Wales, 1/2 October

3 ESOC members were in the Scotland team at the 2022 Veteran Home International.

The 2022 Veteran Home International took place in Snowdonia, organised by the small Welsh clubs Eryri Orienteering Club and Mid Wales Orienteering Club.

The Individual event was on Saturday, in conjunction with the Welsh Championships, and was at Gwanas, SE of Dolgellau. This is an area of rough open hillside, mostly tussock with plenty of contour detail, crags and marshes, and some pasture fields at the end of the courses. The weather forecast had been poor, so cagoules were compulsory, but although it was windy, the rain held off during the event.
In the Individual event, each team can have 2 competitors in each of M/W40 to M/W60, plus 1 in M/W35 and M/W65, making 24 in a full team. Unfortunately Scotland only had 1 W40, due to illness.
Alison Cunningham came 2nd in W55; Sally Lindsay came 5th in W60 (running up); Janice Nisbet came 3rd in W65.
There had been some problems with the start units, and the results team had to do a lot of work to sort these out. At the social on Saturday evening, the scores were announced, with England 10 points ahead of Scotland. This was later corrected to 5.5 points, so there were high hopes for the next day’s relays.

The Relays were at Llechweddgain, SE of Trawsfynydd, a little further north. This is another open moorland area, with similar terrain to the previous day. There was a long walk up to Assembly from the parking area. Luckily the weather was fine and mild, with blue skies and sunshine, though it clouded over later on.
There are 2 classes in the relays: WMW (2 women plus 1 man), and MWM (2 men plus 1 woman). The aggregate of each team’s BOF ages must be 145 or greater.
In WMW, Janice ran 1st leg in the Scotland 7 team, who won the class, and Sally ran 1st leg in the Scotland 6 team. In MWM, Alison ran 2nd leg in the Scotland 1 team – she was the first 2nd leg runner back, and the team eventually came 2nd.

England won the overall competition, and Scotland were 2nd. Further details about the weekend can be found on the Welsh Championships event page of the MWOC website, and full results, including team points, are available here.
There’s a report from the VHI weekend on the Scottish Orienteering website too, and there are photos from the Individual event here.
