Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

ESOC Seven Hills ChallengeA challenge to keep you moving through February!

Get to know the hills in your local area

Get to know the hills in your local area.

The ESOC Seven Hills Challenge is an exciting innovation in which every member can participate at their own pace, in their own local council area, right through February and starting on Sunday 7th. The challenge is to visit all seven of your local summits during the month from 7th February until 6th March, have fun and take pictures of yourselves to share with the club and on social media! There is something for everyone, and you can do whatever suits you at any time! There is also a chance to try Turf and/or MapRunF, as part of the challenge, if you would like to.

Photos!

The photo theme is “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves”. We are expecting snow over the coming weeks, so we are looking for your best “snow” photos of any type. Also, harnessing the seven theme, you might also choose to be one of the dwarves, by looking “happy”, “bashful”, “grumpy”, etc. in your pictures! Please get creative! Send pictures to email hidden; JavaScript is required.

The Hills

The seven hills in each council area are set out below, with grid references. There are hills suggested for you in Edinburgh City, Midlothian, East Lothian, West Lothian and Fife. In the Borders, since it’s a much bigger area, we are simply encouraging you to visit a local hill that suits you!

Try Turf!

In any of the council areas, you can “log” your progress by using the Turf app, so each of the hill tops has a turf zone which you can “take” when you get there, and it’s a perfect chance to give this a go, even if you’ve never tried it before.
See the FAQ here to get you up and running:
There is also a separate Turf competition on Sunday 7th February, but there is no need to get involved in that if you’re simply trying the app, and you will see how simple and fun it is. Please give it a go! Join the ESOC Turfers WhatsApp group for hints and tips (and you can always drop out later if you like!)

MapRunF for the 7 Edinburgh Hills

In Edinburgh City, there is also a special Edinburgh Seven Hills MapRunF Scatter Course, with a control on each summit. Pick any control to be your Start AND Finish. Visit as many controls as you want in any order. Return to your first control when you are sure you want to finish. To make things even more helpful for you, there are three additional lower-level start/finish locations strategically placed to avoid the need to go back up to a summit to finish your course. The map is available here in pdf format (2 A4 sheets) and it will be on MaprunF by Saturday 6th February. You do not need to visit each control for the scatter course to work, so again it’s a good chance to try out MapRunF, if you haven’t before.

Please stay safe!

This is not an official event or activity, and so is at own risk and are not covered by any orienteering insurance. You must observe current government guidelines regarding travel and exercise. Snow and ice can make for dangerous underfoot conditions everywhere; take extra care if so.

Questions?

We’ve tried to keep it simple but if you do have any questions please get in touch with Janet on email hidden; JavaScript is required, or join the ESOC Photos & Chat WhatsApp group
