Glasgow Parks Championships 20096 December
The 11th Glasgow Parks Championships, with races in 3 different Glasgow parks, saw a good turnout from ESOC, and prizewinners in two of the classes.
The Glasgow Parks Championships is an annual event, featuring 3 separate events in one day. The location of the first park is announced a couple of days before the event, and the others are only revealed on the day. There’s a competition to guess which parks will be used, and Crawford Lindsay won this, for the second year running.
The first race was at Springburn Park, NE of the city centre, a fairly small park with a variety of terrain, including a rockery with some very slippery paths. The second race was at Kelvingrove Park, a formal city park by the River Kelvin, with plenty of confusing features. The event centre for the second race was at the Kelvin Hall, which offered welcome facilities and a chance to warm up. The first two races had allocated start times, and there was a chasing start for the final race, at Cathkin Braes, on the southern edge of the city. This is a country park with more traditional orienteering terrain, a complete contrast to the first two races.
The weather was overcast but dry, though a bit chilly at times. Underfoot conditions were very wet at all three parks.
