Glasgow Parks Championships 2018Sunday 2 December

A good crowd from ESOC competed at the 20th Glasgow Parks Championships, with three class winners.

The Glasgow Parks Championships is an annual competition, with three separate short events in one day. It’s an enjoyable day, with plenty of opportunities for socialising between races and at the prizegiving later on. Start times are allocated for the first two races, with a chasing start for the final race. This year, in a break with tradition, the venues were announced in advance.

The first race was at Cuningar Loop Woodland Park, a new park in a loop of the River Clyde SE of the city centre, with some interesting features such as a bouldering area and various sculptures. Junior and Social courses stayed in the park, on a 1:3,000 map. Senior courses, with a 1:4,000 map, visited the residential area in the former Commonwealth Games Athletes’ Village as well, crossing the river on a footbridge.
The second race was nearby, at Tollcross Park, across the Clyde to the NE. This is a small but hilly park, with a children’s farm and the deep glen of the Tollcross Burn.
The third race was at Drumpellier Country Park, on the eastern edge of Glasgow, which has just one corner inside the city boundary. The courses were in the SE part of the park, with registration and start at St Ambrose High School. The terrain included mixed woodland and rough open, with a network of paths and tracks, and it was quite wet underfoot.
The weather was dull all day – raining for the first race, dry for the second, and wet again for the third. Fortunately it was quite mild.
