Glasgow Parks Championships 2019Sunday 1 December

A good crowd from ESOC competed at the 21st Glasgow Parks Championships, with several class winners.

The Glasgow Parks Championships is an annual competition, with three separate short events in one day. It’s always an enjoyable and sociable day. Start times are allocated for the first two races, with a chasing start for the final race.

The first race was at Glasgow Green, by the River Clyde southeast of the city centre. The terrain here is mostly flat, open parkland, giving easy navigation.
The second race was across the river Clyde, at Queen’s Park, which is quite hilly, and has some formal paths and gardens, as well as rougher wooded areas. Many enjoyed the welcome warmth of the glasshouses, where there was also an interesting reptile house.
The third race was nearby, in Pollok Country Park, with the start and finish beside playing fields in the east of the park. Pollok Park has many tracks and paths through varied terrain including woodland and open parkland. Courses looped around the woodland, past the Burrell Collection buildings, which are currently closed for refurbishment.
The weather was very cold and frosty, with beautiful tracery on spiders’ webs and vegetation. It was misty for the first race, but the sun broke through later on. Underfoot conditions were mostly good, with some ice on paths.
