Jamie Stevenson Trophy 2014Deuchny Wood, 15 June

ESOC equalled their best ever result at the Jamie Stevenson Trophy!

The Jamie Stevenson Trophy is an annual Scottish inter-club junior competition, always hotly-contested, and a great day out. It’s named after the ESOC honorary member (and former ESOC junior) who won a gold medal at the 2003 World Orienteering Championships in Switzerland. This year the event was organised by Judy Bell, from ESOC, and there were several ESOC members helping too.

Deuchny Wood lies east of Perth, and is a Forestry Commission plantation, with some interesting contour detail, lush undergrowth in places, and a complex path network. All courses ran through more open land towards the finish. Unfortunately the weather was drizzly, and everyone got quite wet. As usual, there was a barbecue while the results were calculated.

There were nearly 150 juniors competing, from 12 different Scottish clubs. There are Yellow, Orange, Light Green and Green courses, with separate classes for boys and girls on each. The winner in each class gets 100 points, 2nd place gets 99 points, and so on, then each club’s best 6 scores are added up to find their total. This year, ESOC had a team of 11.

MAROC won the trophy once again, with 596 points. ESOC came 3rd, with 584 points (4 points behind ECKO and 3 points ahead of FVO). This equals our previous best result, which was at Faskally in 2007.

ESOC’s counting scorers were:
Rona Lindsay, Green Girls – 100 points
Andrew Lindsay, Green Boys – 100 points
David McPhillips, Yellow Boys – 97 points
Rachel Brown, Orange Girls – 96 points
Craig Nolan, Green Boys – 96 points
Rhianna Mitchell, Yellow Girls – 95 points

Full results, Routegadget and other details about the event are available on the JST 2014 page of the SOA website.

There's a selection of photos from the event in the JST 2014 album of ESOC's Google Album Archive.
