A few ESOC members went to a double-header weekend of Level B events on excellent terrain in the southern Lake District, organised by LOC and SROC.

On Saturday 12 November, Lakeland Orienteering Club organised a Middle Distance event at Sandscale Haws, near Barrow in Furness. This is an area of open sand dunes, some very large, with intricate contours throughout, so it was important to keep in touch with the map. The vegetation was mostly rough grass, with a few paths and many small animal tracks, and the dunes were well-drained and fairly dry underfoot, despite very wet weather overnight. The weather on the day was mostly fine, with a couple of showers. The parking field was saturated though, and the parking team worked hard pushing vehicles out.

ESOC results were:
Brown (71 competitors) – Rona Lindsay 6th
Blue Men (78) – Clive Masson 6th, Crawford Lindsay 40th
Green Men (74) – Brian Yates 67th
Short Green (77) – Sally Lindsay 6th, Janice Nisbet 15th

Full results and further details are on the Sandscale Haws event page of the Lakeland Orienteering Club website.

Sunday’s event, presented by South Ribble Orienteering Club, was Long Distance, at Torver High Common, further north. There was a long approach along a forest track, and the terrain was open hillside, with many rock features and complex contours in places. Some parts were quite steep, and it was very wet underfoot. The weather was dull but dry, and there was little wind, so it was relatively mild.

ESOC results were:
Blue (98 competitors) – Crawford Lindsay 26th
Green (93) – Rona Lindsay 1st, Janice Nisbet 43rd, Sally Lindsay 52nd, Brian Yates 85th

Full results and other details are available on the November weekend page of the SROC website.

These events were the final two in the 2016 UK Orienteering League. There are more details about the UKOL, including the final league tables, on the UK Orienteering League page of the British Orienteering website. In the club league (based on the 15 best individual scores), ESOC's final position was 19th=.
