Hash Run - 4th May 2011

Ian Jackson’s annual hash run was eagerly anticipated as 30 odd ESOC members
descended on Judy and Keith’s house in Colinton on Wednesday evening. The
evening was mild, dry and still as we set off into the highways and byways
of Colinton, the power walking group to do an anticlockwise route and the
runners to do a clockwise route. Actually, it was much more byways than
highways. How Ian finds the tiny paths that wind their way through the
undergrowth is a skill known only to hash course planners. In the briefing
we were alerted to several kinds of nasty plants we would encounter, several
stream crossings, some of which, it transpired, would not disgrace
Edinburgh’s urban Rat Race, and to the need to have the courage to pass
through the wardrobe door into Narnia (which turned out to be a doorway
randomly placed in the middle of a gassy path between houses). We failed to
notice coming out of Narnia as the courses progressed, but everyone did
arrive back safely at the Bell/Brown house after the best part of an hour of
entertaining exercise. First-timers and seasoned hashers alike expressed
profuse thanks to Ian for magnificent courses, which were described by some
regular attendees as Ian’s best yet. Only Ian was a little disappointed,
because after both groups arrived back at the same time last year he was
hoping for the same again. Unfortunately the power walkers took a little
longer this year - and it was all our hosts could do to make sure the
runners didn’t scoff all the food they had provided before the walkers
returned.

Socialising lasted well into the evening. Junior members were quick to
point out that there were seven different sorts of cake on offer, and then
proceeded to bounce off the effect of this on the mini-trampoline. Seniors
talked the hind legs off a donkey, as usual. With patio doors opening onto
a terrace where chairs were arranged around a wood-burning brazier,
something of a party atmosphere developed as the balmy evening wore on.
Great run, great socialising. Very many thanks to Judy and Keith for making
their house available and providing refreshments, and thanks again to Ian.
