Northern Championships Weekend 2016Whitby, 16/17 April
A few ESOC members travelled south for two contrasting events in North Yorkshire, with some great results.
Cleveland Orienteering Klub presented an Urban race on Saturday, with Sprint courses for M/W 18E, 20E and 21E, followed by the Northern Championships on Sunday.
Saturday’s event was in Whitby town, with the event centre at Whitby Leisure Centre. The longer courses started a little to the south, and looped around modern residential areas and through a steeply-sloping park, before descending into the alleyways among the old red-roofed houses above the harbour. Sprint courses started near the pavilion on the West Cliff, zig-zagged through the old town and park, then up again to the finish. Whitby is very hilly, so all courses had a lot of climb. Unfortunately the weather was cold and windy, and there were heavy hail showers throughout the race, so everyone got very wet, although it was sunny for the rest of the day.
ESOC results:
Course 1: M21E Sprint (17 competitors) – Andrew Lindsay 10th
Course 2: W21E Sprint (14) – Claire Ward 1st, Rona Lindsay 5th
Course 6: Men 40+ (75) – Terry Johnstone 40th
Course 9: W55+, M65+ (87) – Janice Nisbet 31st, Brian Yates 81st
Course 12: M/W12- (21) – Laurence Ward 14th, Lucy Ward 17th

The Northern Championships event was at Mulgrave Woods, north of Whitby. Due to the intended parking field being waterlogged and unusable, the parking was some distance away, with bussing to the event, followed by a 2km walk to the arena. The terrain is mixed woodland in two parallel valleys with a ruined castle on the spur between them, and a network of tracks and paths runs along the valleys via bridges and tunnels. The woodland is varied, including well-kept ornamental parkland, an old arboretum, commercial plantation and unmanaged broadleaf woodland. There were many steep slopes, plenty of contour detail, and everywhere was very muddy. The weather was much better than the previous day.
ESOC results were:
Course 1 (15 competitors) – Andrew Lindsay 7th
Course 2 (10) – Claire Ward 2nd, Rona Lindsay 5th
Course 3 (54) – Terry Johnstone 44th
Course 11 (59) – Brian Yates 56th
Course 12 (20) – Janice Nisbet 3rd
Full results, with Routegadget and Planner’s comments, are available on the Mulgrave Woods Results page of the CLOK website.
