Scottish Score Championships 2013Balkello Hill, 3 November

There was glorious weather for this year’s Scottish Score Championships, and some ESOC trophy winners too.

The 2013 Scottish Score event was hosted by Tayside Orienteers at Balkello Hill, just north of Dundee. The area is mainly open hillside with scattered trees, and denser community woodland on the lower slopes. Old quarry workings have left areas of broken ground and intricate contour detail, as well as a few steep scree slopes, and several controls proved tricky to locate. Deep heather made for slow progress in some places away from the paths, but this gave a chance to appreciate the panoramic views of snowy hills to the north and the Tay estuary to the south. The start was in the centre of the area, so an immediate decision was needed on which way to go, and people headed in all directions. There were time limits of 70 minutes for M20-35 and W21, 40 minutes for M/W14 and below, and 60 minutes for everyone else. There were also some colour-coded courses.
It was a lovely sunny autumn day, though there was a chilly breeze.

The ESOC trophy winners were:
Ben Brown (M12)
Rachel Brown (W10)
Sally Lindsay (W55)
Margaret Dalgleish (W60)
Janet Clark (W70)

This event was also the Scottish Inter-Club Championships, and ESOC came second (3849 points) to Forth Valley Orienteers (4135 points) in the Large Clubs category. The scores for this are calculated by applying a weighting to everyone’s Scottish Score points, according to age and gender. For the Large Clubs category, the 5 highest SICC scores from each club counted.

Full results, including the SICC points and Routegadget, as well as further details about the event, are available on the Scottish Score Championships page of the Tayside Orienteers website.
