Scottish Score Championships 2017Quarrelwood, 26 November

Just a few ESOC members journeyed north for this year’s Scottish Score Championships, organised by Moravian Orienteers.

The 2017 Scottish Score Championships was at Quarrelwood, just west of Elgin. This area is a steep-sided forested hill, mostly deciduous trees with lovely autumn colours, and some patches of thicker conifers. There are several disused quarries, giving some interesting and complex terrain, as well as an ancient circular enclosure (or henge) on the top of the hill. The runnability varied, from very fast under the beech trees to slow and heathery – often it was quickest to follow the paths, though mostly they were quite muddy following recent rain.
The weather was dry and bright, with a cool breeze.

There were time limits of 70 minutes for M20-35 and W21, 40 minutes for M/W14 and below, and 60 minutes for everyone else. The start and finish were at the eastern end of the wood, close to the event centre in the Eight Acres Hotel, which provided a very welcome warm indoor space for socialising before the prizegiving.

For the first time in many years, there were no ESOC trophy winners.
The ESOC results were:
M60 – Crawford Lindsay 3rd, Alistair Armitage 6th
M70 – Ian Pyrah 4th
W60 – Sally Lindsay 3rd, Rhona Fraser 5th
W70 – Eleanor Pyrah 2nd
