SOL 4, 2017Glen Nant, 14 May
The fourth event in this year’s Scottish Orienteering League was presented by EckO on a new map, and plenty of ESOC members enjoyed the terrain.
Glen Nant is a National Nature Reserve in Argyll, south of Taynuilt. Parking was on a forest road, which involved some manoeuvring to arrange all cars facing downhill, allowing an easier exit. The competition area included two distinct terrain types: the steep and technical Glen Nant oak woodlands to the north and the more open grazed flanks of Cruach Airdeny to the south. There were 2 starts and 2 finishes, so that courses could take in the most appropriate terrain. The longest courses were in both terrain types, the shortest courses were on paths in the woodlands, and most courses were in the open area. This was delightful terrain, rough grassland with scattered birch woods, lots of contour detail, some rock features, and few paths. Following recent fine weather, it was fairly dry underfoot. The expected rain held off, and the weather was sunny most of the time, delivering the promised spectacular views of Ben Cruachan, to the NE.
ESOC results in the top half were:
Brown (18 competitors) – Walter Clark 8th
Blue (45) – Tyler Morrison 14th, Crawford Lindsay 18th
Short Blue (28) – Alison Cunningham 5th, Roger Garnett 11th
