Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

SOL 6, 2017Forvie, 15 October

The penultimate event in this year’s Scottish Orienteering League saw a lower than usual ESOC entry, but they enjoyed the great terrain, with some excellent results.

Forvie is on the coast north of Aberdeen, and is a National Nature Reserve, with some of the largest sand dunes in Britain. There’s intricate contour detail in the dunes, and large expanses of flatter dune heath in between. The marshes were very wet, and the dune heath vegetation was a spongy mixture of heather, crowberry, grass and slippery lichen, so it was slow going in places. There were 2 starts – the longer courses had a long walk to the far start, along the cliff edge, enjoying wonderful views of the dramatic coast.
The weather was very windy though fortunately mild, and it stayed dry.

ESOC results in the top half were:
Brown (17 competitors) – Rona Lindsay 9th
Blue (36) – Keith Brown 8th, Tyler Morrison 14th
Short Blue (27) – Finlay Ross 3rd, Dave Kershaw 7th
Green (52) – Ben Brown 3rd, Judy Bell 22nd, Sally Lindsay 23rd
Short Green (23) – Margaret Dalgleish 1st
Light Green (31) – Rachel Brown 3rd, Heidi Ross 12th
