SOL 7, 2022West Loch Doon, 23 October
The final event in the 2022 Scottish Orienteering League was organised by Ayrshire Orienteering Club on another great technical area.
SOL 7 took place on the open hillsides of Glenmount and Glessel Hills, on the west side of Loch Doon, south of Dalmellington. The terrain is rough, mostly tussock, with slow going in the marshy areas (enlivened by many drainage ditches). The walk up to the start went through a particularly featureless area, but most of the map has intricate contours, with many hills, knolls and spurs and plenty of rock features. There weren’t many line features on the open hill, just a few tracks and fences, but the Orange and Light Green competitors followed a path through woodland in the Ness Glen at the end of their courses. It was very wet underfoot. The weather was dull and generally damp, but luckily it wasn’t raining all the time, and it was quite mild.
ESOC results in the top half of their courses:
Blue (30 competitors) - Rachel Brown 1st, Keith Brown 11th
Short Blue (13) - Crawford Lindsay 3rd
Green (27) - Roger Garnett 6th, Les Dalgleish 14th
Short Green (33) - Sally Lindsay 3rd, Margaret Dalgleish 6th, Judy Bell 8th, Mary Williams 9th, Roger Scrutton 12th
