Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

SoSOL 3, 2023Whitekirk Hill, 30 April

East Lothian Orienteers organised the third event of this year’s South of Scotland Orienteering League, on a brand new map, and there were some good results from ESOC competitors.

Whitekirk Hill is SE of North Berwick, and was described in the pre-event details as having “a variety of rock and contour features on broadly open hillside with picturesque views over East Lothian”. The terrain was indeed quite varied, mostly rough open grassland with lots of small hills, gorse thickets, a few crags and some woodland. There were plenty of paths and tracks. Courses zig-zagged around the area and the longer courses had double-sided maps. ESOC’s Roger Scrutton was the Controller.
Following earlier rain, the vegetation was very wet, so everyone had surprisingly wet feet. The weather was dull, with a shower for later starters.

ESOC members in the top half of the results for their course were:
Brown (15 competitors) – Alison O’Neil 6th
Blue (33) – Oli Warlow 1st, Keith Brown 5th, Sabine Oechsner 7th, Terry Johnstone 12th
Green (24) – Tom Uutela 3rd, Calum Robertson 4th, Megan Brown 6th, Les Dalgleish 10th
Short Green (13) – Judy Bell 1st, Sally Lindsay 3rd, Margaret Dalgleish 5th
Light Green (9) – Olly Simmers 3rd, Tate Woodhouse 4th, Sam Baker 5th
Orange (17) – Fiona Findlay 7th
