SoSOL2, 2017Hedderwick Hill/John Muir Country Park, 26 February
There was a great turnout and some great results from ESOC for the second South of Scotland Orienteering League event this year, organised by East Lothian Orienteers.
SoSOL 2 took place on the East Lothian coast, just west of Dunbar, with the event centre at East Links Family Park. Registration was in the café, which gave welcome shelter. The area includes fairly flat mature pine forest with a good path network, and a coastal fringe with dunes covered in marram grass. The longer courses visited more extensive dunes on Spike Island (beyond the saltmarsh, with the added frisson of needing to be back before high tide), and some courses headed southwards along the Hedderwick Burn to slightly hillier terrain and mature deciduous forest near Foxlake.
The weather was mild but with very strong winds all day – it was reasonably sheltered in the woods, but Spike Island was very exposed. Early runners enjoyed some sun, with showers later on.
ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Brown (11 competitors) - Martin Quirke 4th
