Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

SoSOL5 - 2014/15Saltoun & Humbie, 30 November

The 5th event in the 2014/15 South of Scotland Orienteering League was presented by East Lothian Orienteers, on a sunny autumn day, with plenty of ESOC members competing.

Saltoun Forest is near Pencaitland in East Lothian, and has been recently remapped. The NE half of the area is on a fairly level plateau with a good path network, and the SW half includes a steep-sided river valley with less distinct paths. The whole area has variable runnability; it was reported to be a bit rough in the forest blocks, with a lot of ditches to jump, and lovely beside the river. The shorter courses stayed in the NE half, while Blue and Brown crossed the river.
The weather was fine, with bright low sun and no wind, making for very pleasant running conditions.

ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Blue (28) – Heather Thomson 2nd, Tom Mallows 3rd, Mike Stewart 5th, Roger Garnett 8th
Green (39) – Ian Pyrah 8th, Maggie Scrugham 9th, Les Dalgleish 120th
Short Green (10) – Eleanor Pyrah 4th
Light Green (5) – Ben Brown 2nd
Orange (8) – Rachel Brown 1st
Yellow (8) – Jamie Lawlor 2nd
White (9) – Joseph Lawlor 3rd, Rowan Lawlor 4th, Megan Brown 5th

This event was also the East Area Inter-club Competition – each club’s 2 highest-placed runners on each course scored points. ESOC retained the trophy, with a total of 111, and our counting scorers were:
Brown – Jonathan Ellis 10, Euan Mackenzie 8
Blue – Heather Thomson 12, Tom Mallows 11
Green – Ian Pyrah 8, Maggie Scrugham 7
