SOUL 2, 2017Bughtlin, 5 February
The prologue of this year’s ESOC Sprint formed the second event of the 2017 Scottish Orienteering Urban League, with some excellent ESOC results.
Bughtlin is an area of modern housing on the west side of Edinburgh, lying between Drum Brae and Maybury Road. Although a small area, it’s very complex, and ideal for sprint orienteering, with irregular shapes, parkland and courtyards with trees, fences and other features, many small pathways between the houses, and underpasses for crossing the main roads. The courses offered plenty of route choice and it was important to maintain contact with the map. The weather was cool but bright, and there were indoor facilities (including a café) at Drum Brae Leisure Centre, which competitors enjoyed before moving on to Cammo for the second part of the ESOC Sprint.
