SOUL 4, 2017Dunstaffnage & Dunbeg, Saturday 13 May
There was a fair turnout of ESOC competitors for the fourth event in the 2017 Scottish Orienteering Urban League, with several first places.
Dunstaffnage is on the west coast, north of Oban, and is the home of the Scottish Association for Marine Science. Parking and registration for the event was in the Marine Science Park complex, at the Ocean Explorer Centre, which had some interesting displays and a good café.
The terrain was a mix of urban terrain in the marine science campus, wooded park land around Dunstaffnage Castle, rough open coastal grassland, and the beach itself. The longest courses included rougher open hill with scattered gorse, plus the village of Dunbeg and its surrounding housing schemes, with some tricky route choices.
The weather was quite damp, with some heavy showers, but fortunately it wasn’t cold.
ESOC members who were in the top half of the results were:
Open Women (10 competitors) – Rona Lindsay 1st
Veteran Men 40+ (14) – Walter Clark 4th
Veteran Women 40+ (15) – Alison Cunningham 1st
Supervet Men 55+ (11) – Crawford Lindsay 6th
