Some ESOC members enjoyed an excellent double-header weekend in the Lake District.

It was a beautiful weekend in the Lake District, with daffodils and lambs everywhere, wonderful scenery, great terrain, and well-organised events.

On Saturday 23 April, there was a Middle Distance event at Blakeholme, on the east side of Windermere lake, organised by South Ribble Orienteering Club. Parking was on forest roads to the south, and there was a long walk to the start (and also back from the finish), but luckily the weather was good, and there were lovely views. The terrain was very technical mature woodland, with lots of rock and intricate contours, and only a few paths, giving a good navigational challenge.

ESOC results were:
Brown (62 competitors) – Rachel Brown, running as EUOC, 20th (1st W20)
Blue (99) – Richard Oxlade 6th (2nd M60), Alison O’Neil 15th (1st W35), Crawford Lindsay 62nd (7th M65)
Green (126) – Roger Garnett 44th (9th M70), Sally Lindsay 49th (6th W65), Les Dalgleish 98th (15th M70)
Short Green (68) – Margaret Dalgleish 2nd (1st W70), Roger Scrutton 14th (2nd M75), Eleanor Pyrah 28th (1st W75), Ian Pyrah 35th (8th M75), Anne Hoy 54th (8th W60)

On Sunday 24 April, there was a complete contrast: a Cumbrian Galoppen event on Loughrigg Fell, above Ambleside, organised by Lakeland Orienteering Club. This is a high open fell, with big and small crags, marshes, small tarns, paths and plenty of contour detail everywhere. Again there was a long walk up to the start. The weather was sunny but quite windy, and there were panoramic views of the higher fells and along the lake below.

ESOC results were:
Blue (111 competitors) – Rachel Brown, running as EUOC, 14th (1st W20), Alison O’Neil 32nd (1st W35), Richard Oxlade 43rd (6th M60), Crawford Lindsay 45th (3rd M65)
Green (131) – Les Dalgleish 89th (10th M70), Roger Garnett 99th (11th M70)
Short Green (65) – Roger Scrutton 22nd (3rd M75), Sally Lindsay 23rd (7th W65), Margaret Dalgleish 30th (3rd W70), Ian Pyrah 33rd (6th M75)
Very Short Green (9) – Eleanor Pyrah 1st
