Sprint Scotland 2024 was organised by Masterplan Adventure and featured 3 separate events, all in complex urban terrain, including the 3rd event in the 2024 Scottish Orienteering Urban League.

On Saturday, there were 2 events in the north of Glenrothes, centred on Collydean Primary School. The surrounding terrain is modern housing estates with intricate pathways, steps, some grassy areas, and a lot of bushes. These varied in density and were mapped accordingly, but were all very scratchy. The area to the E of the school featured rows of houses connected in zigzag patterns, while the area to the W had more square shapes, but was just as complex. Artificial barriers added to the navigational challenge and everyone enjoyed the well-planned courses.

For Race 1, in the morning, the longer courses visited both areas, while the shorter courses remained in the eastern part. The Start and Finish were close by.

ESOC results in the top half:

  • W Open (24 competitors) – Helen Bridle 4th, Rachel Brown (running as EUOC) 5th
  • M Junior (5) – Calum Robertson 3rd
  • M Ultravet (6) – Crawford Lindsay 3rd
  • W Ultravet (8) – Sally Lindsay 2nd, Rhona Fraser 4th

For Race 2, in the afternoon, the longer courses had a remote start 1.5km away to the SE, exploring a third area before crossing a footbridge to return to the eastern part. Shorter courses were in the area west of the school.

ESOC results in the top half:

  • W Open (24 competitors) – Rachel Brown (running as EUOC) 7th, Helen Bridle 10th
  • M Junior (5) – Calum Robertson 3rd
  • M Ultravet (6) – Crawford Lindsay 3rd
  • W Ultravet (8) – Sally Lindsay 2nd, Rhona Fraser 4th

Race 3, on Sunday, was in the south of Glenrothes, with the arena at Caskieberran Primary School. This was a Sprint race for the Men’s and Women’s Open classes, and their start was a short distance to the N. For other classes, it was an Urban event, with the start near the school. Caskieberran is another very complex area, with more grass and fewer bushes than Collydean, and there were some interesting sculptures dotted around. The courses were all sprint-style, demanding full concentration and offering plenty of route choice; great fun.

ESOC results in the top half were:

  • W Open (27 competitors) – Rachel Brown (running as EUOC) 5th, Helen Bridle 10th
  • W Supervet (15) – Helena Nolan 4th
  • M Ultravet (11) – Martin Caldwell 4th, Crawford Lindsay 5th
  • W Ultravet (8) – Sally Lindsay 3rd, Rhona Fraser 4th
  • M Junior (5) – Calum Robertson 3rd

This was the 3rd event in the 2024 Scottish Orienteering Urban League. See the SOUL page of the Scottish Orienteering Association website for further details. The latest league tables are here.
