SSOF 2023Callendar Park, Falkirk, 2 June
It was warm and sunny for the 2023 Scottish Schools’ Orienteering Festival, and ESOC juniors had a great time, with several podium places.
The Scottish Schools’ Orienteering Festival is an annual event in early June. This year it took place at Callendar Park in Falkirk, a new venue for the SSOF. Callendar Park is south of the town centre, and is a large area of varied parkland and woodland centred on the historic Callendar House. There’s a good network of paths and tracks, a loch, and lots of gullies and ditches in the wilder parts, which slope up to the south. The start was south of the house, and courses looped around to the finish, on lawns on the north side of the house.
ESOC’s Heidi Ross was co-organiser, Roger Scrutton was the controller, and ESOC helpers included Judy Bell and Margaret & Les Dalgleish. David & Hanne Robertson took a group of 39 from various East Lothian schools, and Elspeth Bleakley and Jonny Muir were there with another group of 39 from George Heriot’s. Start times were from 10am until noon, and there were orienteering games and activities throughout the day for pupils to try. The weather was warm and sunny.
As usual, there were teams from schools all over Scotland, and over 300 pupils took part in the Festival. The competition classes are based on academic year, from P5 upwards. There are team trophies for each competition class, worked out from the total time of the best 3 results for the same school.
