STAG Score 2, 2020Strathclyde Country Park, 12 January
STAG’s score series continued, with a hardy few from ESOC.
The second event in St Andrew’s Orienteering Club (Glasgow)’s 2020 score series was at Strathclyde Country Park. This is SE of Glasgow, beside the River Clyde and the M74 near Motherwell. The main feature of the park is Strathclyde Loch, fed by the South Calder River, with a steep-sided valley. The terrain is mature woodland, scratchy undergrowth and open parkland, with a network of tracks and paths.
As before, the main event was a 60-minute Score course, and there was a “Score Twist” option as an additional challenge. Yellow, Orange, and Light Green courses were also available. For the Score, there were 25 controls (5 each with 300 points, 400 points, 500 points, 600 points and 700 points) giving 12,500 as the maximum possible score - this time no-one achieved this.
There were 49 competitors on the 60-minute Score course, and the following ESOC members were in the top half of the results:
Timothy May – 8th (7,130 points)
Heather Thomson – 11th (6,900 points)
Margaret Dalgleish – 20th (5,500 points)
Calum Robertson won the Orange course.
For this event, the “Score Twist” was that 2 controls from the same ‘family’ couldn’t be visited in succession (i.e. each control had to have a different first digit from the one before it). 9 competitors attempted this, but none from ESOC.
Full results are available in the STAG Score 2 news item, on the STAG website.
This event is the second in a series of five. The next event is on Sunday 19 January at Drumpellier Country Park, Coatbridge. See this news item for further details about the series.
