TAY Christmas score event 2010Knock of Crieff, 12 December
There was a fair turnout of ESOC members at TAY’s annual fun event, based at the Famous Grouse Visitor Centre, with orienteering at Knock of Crieff.
Knock of Crieff is a small double-topped hill beside the town of Crieff – it has deciduous woodland at one end, coniferous plantation at the other, and rough open land lower down.
The weather was very cold, but beautiful, with blue skies and sunshine, and lovely views. Underfoot conditions were reasonable, perhaps the most difficult being the icy paths on the way to the start. There was quite a lot of snow on the higher areas, and it was quite deep in places on the rough open land.
There was a choice of a 40 or 60 minute time limit, with 25 controls to find, and a question at each control giving 5 extra points for a correct answer. The questions were general knowledge, though some relied upon local knowledge. Bonus points could also be obtained by working out a (fairly obvious) anagram from letters found at the controls, and by wearing some form of fancy dress, hats in most cases.
On the short course, ESOC won two prizes – Rona Lindsay was 1st woman and Imogen Beck was 2nd woman.

The facilities of the Visitor Centre were much appreciated. Afterwards many competitors stayed on for Christmas lunch in the distillery restaurant, or a snack in the café. Some may even have taken the distillery tour.
