Tinto Twin 2021Drumpellier Country Park, 30/31 October

The 32nd Tinto Twin weekend was hosted by STAG, and ESOC members enjoyed the event, winning several trophies.

The Tinto Twin has been running since 1988, hosted by Tinto Orienteering Club as an annual 2-day competition, with a night event on Saturday, followed by a day event on Sunday. Tinto have now stepped down from organising this event, and the 2021 weekend was organised by STAG (St Andrew’s Orienteering Club Glasgow). Both events were at Drumpellier Country Park, near Coatbridge, to the east of Glasgow.

There’s a wide variety of terrain, from dense scrub through mixed woodland to open grassland, lowland heath, and a golf course (available at night) with a good network of paths and tracks and some gentle hills, plus a loch in the north of the area. Controls were spread throughout the area, on a variety of features including tall T-shaped posts in dense young woodland. Following the recent heavy rain, everywhere was very wet underfoot and the night courses were amended to avoid a particularly flooded crossing point.

The Start for Saturday’s night event was by St Ambrose High School on the east side of the map, and the courses looped around the southern part, returning via the golf course. The weather was mild and fine.

ESOC members in the top half of the results for their course were:
N2 (5 competitors) – Rona Lindsay 1st
N3 (14) – Mark Wood 3rd, Terry Johnstone 6th, Keith Brown 7th
N4 (14) – Alison Cunningham 1st, Sally Lindsay 4th, Judy Bell 6th, Mary Williams 7th
N5 (3) – Calum Robertson 1st

On Sunday, the day event Start was beside the loch, near the Country Park Visitor Centre, and the courses reused many of the controls from the previous night’s event, in different combinations. The weather had started off very wet, but luckily the rain stopped, although it was still very wet underfoot.

ESOC members in the top half of the results for their course were:
D2 (6 competitors) – Rona Lindsay 3rd
D3 (22) – Mark Wood 2nd, Keith Brown 5th, Terry Johnstone 9th
D4 (22) – Alison Cunningham 1st, Crawford Lindsay 3rd, Sally Lindsay 5th, Mary Williams 7th
D5 (4) – Calum Robertson 1st, Megan Brown 2nd

The overall Tinto Twin competition uses standard age classes, and the ESOC winners were:
Calum Robertson (M14), Crawford Lindsay (M65), Rona Lindsay (W21), Alison Cunningham (W55) Sally Lindsay (W65), Mary Williams (W70).

Full results are available on the 32nd Tinto Twin event page of the STAG website.
