February Social 2023Cramond foreshore, Tuesday 21 February

Another enjoyable social - a MapRun score event on a brand new map, followed by refreshments.

Mark Rowe (ESOC's Social Co-ordinator) reports:
“On a dry, crisp evening a group of club members met up at the Silverknowes golf club to sample the superb new map of Cramond foreshore with a score course superbly planned by Mary Williams. The open fairways and pockets of woodland, coupled with some running along the Forth estuary (and the magnificent views - if you had time to look up!) made for a fantastic evening of orienteering.
The course winners were Alison O’N, David R, Calum R and Maja R who all successfully visited every control inside the 60 minute time limit. The winners’ prizes appropriately enough were golf balls upon which Mary had skilfully applied the ESOC logo (trees, writing and all)! This event was run using MapRun, which worked really well given the fairly open nature of the terrain, being a delight to use, and it provided immediate results.
Afterwards we congregated in the nearby Ye Olde Inn at Davidson's Mains to compare our adventures over several delicious bowls of chips and some liquid refreshments! Newish member Stephen R, some of us found out, is the main man when it comes to the Saunders Mountain Marathon and has recently moved into the area. It was great to hear some of his tales from the event and also compare and contrast the two sports of Mountain Marathons and orienteering. There may even be a few who give Stephen's event a try!”
