May Social 2025Tuesday 20th May, Pentland Skyline Run
The Pentland Hills Skyline Run took place amidst perfect conditions this year, dry overhead and very dry underfoot, not a breath of wind on the hilltops and pleasant temperatures. The best weather we've ever had in your reporters memory in fact. Club members ran in small groups and did a number of different routes to match ability.
The popular routes consist of going down the A702 to either Nine mile burn for the full run - up and over the Kips, Scald Law, Carnethy and Turnhouse Hill, finishing at Flotterstone, or to the start of the old Kirk Road to do the shorter route, which joins the ridge at the col between Scald Law and Carnethy. Many club members have additional little add ons or preferences for routes.
We then retired to The Steading for energy replacement, both of the liquid and food variety. The restaurant at the Flotterstone Inn was closed this year hence the decision to go to The Steading which is not quite so convenient location wise. The food was excellent and was even kept warm for those who had taken a while to traverse the hills.
Those in attendance were asked to submit some comments from the night:
- Fantastic night for a run along the Pentland Skyline, good company making it perfect
- I'd have carried Helena's water but then she'd have to have kept up with me!
- Beautiful evening to be out on the Pentlands. Magnificent views. Rounded off with the pub serving Timothy Taylors!
- Not lost, not dead - success!
- Last night was perfect running conditions, warm and still with fantastic views. Kevin and I picked Rachel up from Flotterstone and managed to start about 5 to 6. We walked the uphills and ran/jogged the downhill and ‘flat’ bits. By the time we got to South Blackhill we could see/hear the followers. We caught up Emma and William and met Abi on Turnhouse. Thanks Mark for taking us to get the car.
We saw a pheasant, a grouse and a skylark but not the promised dotterel. - Despite missing the run, accidentally going to the Flotterstone Inn instead of the Steading ,and then not being allowed into the restaurant area because I’d brought my dog, it was a fantastic evening!! Great to see everyone enjoy the run and the chat afterwards. Well done to Mark for organising another great social!
Thank you to everyone who came along!
