August Social 2014 - Manor Valley RunMonday 11 August

We had a relaxing trip to the Garnetts' home in the Manor Valley for our August Social.

It was a tough decision whether to brave the wind and the rain to make the trip down to the Manor Valley for the August social at the Garnetts'. Especially if you'd had a drenching the previous day at the ultrasprint at Lauriston. But it was worth it. We were rewarded by a pleasant evening out in the hills, which were turning purple with the heather, in this glorious Border valley. Although it was damp underfoot, there was no wind or rain. Distant views were I guess what is called atmospheric! The usual two groups, runners and walkers, set off. I can't say much about the runners except that they were happy with the wind at their back as they started off up the hill. The walkers split into various splinter groups each choosing their own route on the hill behind the Garnetts'. And one geocacher went down to the end of the valley. But all returned safely, and well before dark, to enjoy a feast up to the usual standard of ESOC socials.

This social was held on the second Monday of the month as some members, including our host Roger, were away competing in the Lakes 5 Days the previous week. So we were regaled with tales of long walk ins and tough courses. Sadly the birthday girl, Katy Lessells, didn't make it; we think that the weather stopped the birthday plan for golf at Peebles, but we all sent our best wishes to her - on a card. Commiserations to Fiona Findley, who could not make it, having broken a bone in her foot in the Lakes - the Garnetts' spiral staircase was too much for her stookie. And to Robert too, who will have to chauffeur her for a while! It was good to see some no longer active orienteers Norma, Peter and Jim.

Our thanks go to our hosts Roger and Claire for their hospitality. The glorious scenic situation of their home makes the journey from Edinburgh worthwhile.
