This weekend featured two events in the UK Urban League, and Sunday’s event was also the fourth in the 2026 Scottish Orienteering Urban League. There was a modest turnout from ESOC, but some good results nonetheless.

The historic border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed is only about 60 miles from Edinburgh – some went for the day, and others made a weekend of it. Saturday’s event was organised by Newcastle & Tyneside Orienteers, with Assembly on a grassy area below the impressive walls which enclose the old part of the town. The longer courses started 1.5km away, on the other side of the river, and had a few controls over there before crossing the Old Bridge. The rest started close by, heading off around the outside of the walls and soon leading into the narrow streets and alleyways of the town centre. There was lots of route choice and some tricky controls at different levels on the walls. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed it, and most were surprised at how hilly it was. The weather stayed dry, with a cool breeze.

ESOC results in the top half of their class:

  • M Ultravet (25 competitors) – Kevin Harding 9th, Crawford Lindsay 10th
  • W Ultravet (24) – Sally Linday 2nd, Alison Harding 4th, Margaret Dalgleish 11th
  • M Hypervet (17) – Ewart Scott 1st, Les Dalgleish 4th
  • W Hypervet (13) – Eleanor Pyrah 3rd

Full results, Routegadget and other details about the event are available on the Berwick UKUL event page of the NATO website.

Roxburgh Reivers were the organisers for Sunday’s event (SOUL 4)  in Eyemouth, a few miles north of the Border. The event centre was at Eyemouth High School, on the southern edge of the town, and the start was a short walk downhill towards the town centre. The longest courses included several legs in a housing estate on the west side of the town, where there were many small paths and good route choice. Everyone descended to the harbour area, via narrow streets, steps and courtyards, before heading back uphill, with a couple of controls on the route back to the school that definitely weren’t very urban! The weather was warmer than the day before, though it was quite windy, and it stayed dry.

ESOC results in the top half of their class:

  • W Vet (15 competitors) – Rachael Imrie 2nd, Sarah McAdam 8th
  • M Ultravet (27) – Kevin Harding 7th, Crawford Lindsay 10th
  • W Ultravet (23) – Alison Harding 3rd, Janice Nisbet 5th, Margaret Dalgleish 8th, Sally Lindsay 9th
  • M Hypervet (22) – Ewart Scott 1st, Les Dalgleish 7th, Ian Pyrah 9th
