British Middle Distance Championships, Haverthwaite - 17 April 2010
ESOC members who travelled south for this event were rewarded with glorious weather, beautiful scenery and 2 podium places.
Organised by Lakeland Orienteering Club, the British Middle Distance Championships event was at Haverthwaite Heights, just south of Lake Windermere. Car parking and assembly area were in an idyllic setting by the River Leven, with the Haverthwaite steam railway running alongside. Blue skies and sunshine made for a relaxed atmosphere, and the race commentary kept up the interest through the day.
Middle Distance involves shorter courses with more controls, demanding concentration all the way round the course. The terrain was very technical, mostly oak woodland, with lots of rock and detailed contours, and many people made use of a warm-up area which gave a chance to get used to the map.
There were podium places for Helen Bridle, who won the silver medal in W21E, and Rona Lindsay, who won bronze in W16.
